Folacin
Question: What is the deficiency disease for folic acid? another name is folacin.
does any body know the other name for it?
Answer: Folic acid (folinic acid, folacin, pteroylglutamic acid) was first isolated from spinach leaves (its name derives from the Latin folium meaning "leaf") in 1964 and early on was found to be essential in the prevention of anemia in animals. Later it was discovered that ensuring that mothers had adequate folic acid levels could prevent neural tube defects in human babies.
Question: My nephew is 12 and taking 40 MG Folacin for ADHD a day. He is NOT improving. What is going on? First, 40 MG seems way too high to me!!!?? But he is in his first year of middle school and is actually declining in subjects like Language Arts and Algebra. Notes on teh progress reports say "Needs to focus more" "Does not Study" "Needs to be more organized." Isnt this what Folacin is supposed to help with...and with 40MG how could it not? I read posts on here where kids are improving with 15-20 MG. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Very frustrated. Thanks
Answer: I'd get a second opinion. You don't say who prescribed the meds initially, but plenty of people tend to jump on ADHD as an explanation for everything, and medicate first thing. I'd talk to another doctor and see if anything else can be done.
You're not likely to get a definitive, helpful diagnosis here on Yahoo Answers. I think your best option is to talk with a new doctor and get his opinion.
Question: What happens if you overdose on multi-vitamins ? I take a multi-vitamin everyday. I also sometimes drink a nutritional drink, which also contains 100% RDA of vitamin A, D, C, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folacin, calcium, iron etc etc. So, is it harmful to be taking @ 200 - 400% more than the RDA ? How does the body manage any excess ?
Answer: The RDA is usually the minimum required, usually not the amount actually needed. I wouldn't worry about 200% or even 400% more. Most vitamins & minerals are flushed out of your system. There are a few that you can overdose on retinol & selenium are 2 that comes to mind quickly but multi-vitamins rarely give you 100% of these in a multi-vitamin.
Question: Any ideas for a healthy salad? I need to list ingredients for my FACS class. I need to make a salad that has the following vitamins and minerals:
Vitamins A, D, E, K, C, B1, B2, Niacin, Folacin
Minerals: Calcium, Phosphorus, potassium, sodium, iron, zinc, flourine, copper, and iodine.
It needs to have 6 from each category. Any ideas of what ingredients I should use? Also the amounts of ingredients would be appreciated. It needs to serve 4 people. Thanks!
Answer: Ingredients
8 cups baby spinach leaves
1/2 medium red onion, sliced and separated into rings
1 (11 ounce) can mandarin oranges, drained
1 1/2 cups sweetened dried cranberries
1 cup honey-roasted sliced almonds
1 cup crumbled feta cheese
1 cup balsamic vinaigrette salad dressing, or to taste
Directions
Place servings of spinach onto salad plates. Top with red onion, mandarin oranges, cranberries, sliced almonds and feta cheese in that order. Drizzle dressing over each salad.
Hope It Helps!

I guess vitamins wouldnt be bad. I should try it ;)
Oh and Amavasai, you eat all of those foods plus fattening meat. Don't act like you are better than me, man. I dont eat any of those foods, only nuts. You have to have some fat to survive. Get a clue.
Answer: It is a common misconception that vegetarians do not get these things. Iron deficiency is no more common in vegetarians than in meat eaters... meat does not have as much as people would think.
Also people get way too much protein. You can get all the protein you need from a plant based diet.
Any diet is healthy or unhealthy depending on how you eat. You should always eat a variety of foods. Look around at meat eaters; do they *really* look all that healthy? The ones who are healthy are the ones who eat a balanced diet, exercise and focus on taking care of themselves. Vitamins never hurt, but they are no more or less useful than for people who eat dead animals.

Question: Smelly Urine? Lately i noticed my urine has a stinky smell to it
I think i have a bladder infection
As i need the urinate often and it burns
Could that be the cause of my smelly urine?
But i read that vitamins make your urine smell
I have been taking Cod Liver oil
and Vitamins and Minerals
This contains
Vitamin: A & B6 & B12 & C
Folacin, Pantothenic acid , niacin, riboflavin and thiamin
Is those causing smelly urine?
Should i stop taking them
Answer: Sometimes Vitamin B complex can make your urine bright yellow and give it a vitamin scent. It shouldnt stink, or make you got to the bathroom anymore than usual. Neither should it burn. Thats not normal. Try drinking a ton of Cranberry juice for a couple days and see if the burning and urge to pee starts to reduce. If it does, then you know you got either a bladder infection or urinary tract infection. Continue drinking lots of water and cranberry till it goes away. If you do not see an improvement after a couple days, you should go to the doctor to get antibiotics. A bladder infection is a pretty minor thing and can be cured easy, but if let go and not treated, it can become pretty serious. It can start to infect your kidneys and liver.
Question: vitamin question need help? Question: wen you took ADD meds (specifically Folacin) did you suffer from lack of personality? well my twin brother takes Vyvanse and he doesnt talk as he used to; doesnt have the same personality wen he takes it. i jus got tested for ADD today and theyre goin to start me on Focalin. i was jus wondering if the same thing happened to you or someone you know wen they took said brand. thank you for your help.
any other comments welcome.
Answer: Technically you are and your brother are taking a low grade form of amphetamine. However, Vyvanse is very different from Focalin. Focalin is a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor, while Vyvanse is the pure form of Adderall, which is basically an amphetamine. Vyvanse will reduce side-effects, but it is less effective as Adderall. Focalin, on the other hand will block and decrease norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain so it can be absorbed on a cellular level, increasing performance and attentiveness.
Common side effects with ADHD medicine is decreased appetite, which could be a factor of decreased personality...however the drugs main function is to increase attentiveness and production so you can focus on the task at hand. The decrease of dopamine getting to you brothers head is probably the cause for the personality change...remember this is a hardcore drug you are taking to counteract ADHD.

I read posts on here where kids are improving with 15-20 MG. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Very frustrated. Thanks
Answer: I think it's actually 'Focalin'...so far, it is probably the only medication my son has not tried yet to control his ADD. As far as the dosage, different medications have different efficacy levels. That may be the lowest dose to start him on for that particular drug. Remember, the patient's body weight has to be taken into consideration also. Hope that helps, and keep your chin up and keep fighting the good fight...I have been since my son was two years old; he's eleven now.
Question: Please help, I'm so confused...? Ok, So I'm really confused with, well, about everything...
1. I have arthritis (I'm 13 years old btw) and its getting really annoying, I' on three medications, Enbrel, Methotrexate and folacin. And well It's just plain annoying, is there anything I can do to make it better socially??
2. I'm losing the pigment in my skin (same disease that Michael Jackson had if you are wondering) and its really embarrassing. Because it appears in different places spread out, and I'm just really shy, help??
3. I am always over reacting with symptoms of disease :( !! what can I do to overcome that very annoying gut feeling I always get when I'm afraid and very freaked out?
4. Right now I have two red dots on the lower abdominal, they look A BIT like scabs but feel like lumps and are red around it, I THINK its getting smaller now (About half a day has passed since I saw it). It would just help if you know what it was?? btw, I'm going to the school nurse on Monday if it isn't going away, but that is almost three days to, and It would help if you could, well calm me?
5. I'm having MAJOR trouble on the social front, I don't have any REAL BEST friends, I know you don't have to, but, well, I'm lonely! I also cannot get a boyfrind because of three main reasons, one, im shy, two, low self esteem, and therefore (three) I think im ugly. please?
I know I seem very troubled, and maybe I am, or is it just a phase teenagers go through??? I don't really know, that is why im asking :)
PLEASE, IF YOU HAVE NO ADVISE DON'T COMMENT AT ALL! than you if you have an answer to any of the mentioned questions above, 10 poinst to the best answer :)
Answer: You have to learn how to deal with that, tell your parents the way you feel, but don't if you know they'll laught at your face. Go to see a psychologist if necessary. You are on the way to depression.
One advice I can give you is: Enjoy your youth, we only have one. Don't pay attention to what other people may say. Get into chess club or something you like and find true friends. They will support you now and always.
Don't feel that your disease is your world, because it's not. If you need to go to the doctor, just think that is something you have to do, relax.
And feel blessed you know the disease you have. There's a lot of people who doesn't know what they have, imagine the way they feel every time they go to see a different doctor and none of them can get the answer to their disease, imagine the frustration.
Good luck man.

Are any of the above harmful to a dog?
Answer: A dog is basically a Carnivore and doesn't have the same nutritional requirements of a human and that product is useless as a meal for a dog!
The dog needs ANIMAL PROTEIN and SATURATED FAT! This product doesn't contain animal derivatives at all. (It wouldn't be suitable for Vegetarians if it did) Those levels of Sodium (Salt) are dangerously high for a dog too. The percentages of Vitamins and Minerals are all wrong for a dog and too much or too little of several if not all would be VERY HARMFUL to a dog!
If you really can't find a commercial food (there are lots available besides Canidea) then a raw or 'cooked' natural diet would be far more suitable.
Please don't kill your pet by feeding it a processed human supplement that isn't even designed for a human to live on.
I need Boost myself but I still have to eat proper meals!
You'd do it far less harm feeding it the best diet available at any grocery store than feeding it this way!

Answer: If it says "Best Before" it means that it will be safe to use even years after the expiry, the vitamins will probably lose their.. ummm, "vitamins".. but they will still be safe to consume.
"Use By" is a strict time limit; foods like coleslaw may taste okay but be unsafe to eat where as eggs, although they have a Use By date, will tell you when they have gone off because they will stink of sulphur.

Answer: Totally unhealthy. Too much fat, sugar, sodium, and I doubt your body can process 30 grams protein at a time. You should have put the name of that junk down so others could avoid it.
If you're looking for vitamins/minerals, take a vitamin pill. As for protein, try a glass of Designer Whey or Optimum Nutrition blended with skim milk.

Answer: You have described a fake vitamin that is a pile of garbage. Sorry to tell you this. Just look at the "other" ingredients and see that it has Magnesium Stearate. About 5% of the total milligrams in that junk is Mag Stearate. This is a TRANS FAT, immune suppressant, nutrient absorption inhibitor and if you take the total milligrams in the junk and multiply it by .05, you will see how many milligrams of trans fat you are consuming by taking that. Taking 3 pills, just multiply the number x 3.
The so called vitamins in this junk is nothing more than laboratory produced chemical activators that are NOT vitamins at all. People that take this type of multi-vitamin end up dying sooner than those that do not take this by 5%. Most likely, more money was spent on promotion and advertising than on making a quality product.
The thing they are calling vitamin C is Ascorbic Acid. Ascorbic acid that is called vitamin C by many is not really vitamin C, but a component of the true vitamin C complex. Vitamin C was discovered by the Nobel Prize laureate, Dr. Albert Szent-Georgi in 1937. As part of his research on vitamin C, he found that he could not cure scurvy with the isolated ascorbic acid as a single element.
The complete complex of vitamin C includes ascorbic acid and contains ascorbinogen, bioflavonoids, rutin, tyrosinase, Factor J, Factor K, and Factor P. In addition, mineral co-factors must be available in proper amounts. If any of these parts are missing, there is no vitamin C, no vitamin activity. When some of them are present, the body will draw on its own stores to make up the differences, so that the whole vitamin complex may be present. Provided that all other conditions and co-factors are present, the vitamin activity will take place. Ascorbic acid is described merely as the "antioxidant wrapper" portion of vitamin C; ascorbic acid protects the functional parts of the vitamin from rapid oxidation or breakdown.
Most of the over 90% of ascorbic acid in this country is manufactured at a facility in Nutley, New Jersey, owned by Hoffman-LaRoche, one of the world's biggest drug manufacturers (1 800 526 0189). Here ascorbic acid is made from a process involving cornstarch and volatile acids. Most U.S. vitamin companies then buy the bulk ascorbic acid from this single facility. After that, marketing takes over. Each company makes its own labels, its own claims, and its own formulations, each one claiming to have the superior form of vitamin C, even though it all came from the same place, and it's really not vitamin C at all.
The d-alpha tocopherol that is supposed to be vitamin E is just more chemical activator and far from the E complex that will do you any good. The same problem that occurs with the "C" chemical activator, ascorbic acid, will happen with this vitamin E.
The "B" vitamins are more synthetic chemical activators that are made from the petroleum distillate, Coal Tar. This is not a vitamin, it definitely damages your DNA. Just look at the color of your pee (yellow) and the stench in the toilet after taking that junk. That is your body rejecting that coal tar derivative.
The calcium from citrate/carbonate is the cheapest form of calcium and it comes from rocks, not once living source and will contribute to you getting cataracts, bone spurs, and kidney stones, etc. Manufacturers that use this should be ashamed of themselves.
I could go on and on about the junk they are putting into this, but I think you should be getting the picture. This is not about your health, but profit only.
Please realize that we are in deep trouble in regard to the nutrient value in foods you buy in grocery stores today. We have lost over 50% of the antioxidants in our foods in the last 25 years. Many people will tell you that fortification of products solves that problem, but that is so far from the truth it makes me sick. On the understanding of how poor the food supply is, many manufacturers have taken advantage of this and created this fortification and are using chemical activators (not vitamins) in their products, including vitamin companies everywhere.
When testing these kinds of products energetically, they all test very weak and we know when this happens, the body will reject this junk as toxins. Now, not only do these types of products damage the DNA of your cells, shorten your life, but give the whole health food industry a bad name.
good luck to you

Answer: As long as you don't take more than the recommended amount these liquid multivitamins are quite safe to take. They are absorbed much better than the solid form or dry form of multivitamins in the form of tablets.
Your liquid multivitamin contains a lot of extra ingredients that are not in multivitamin tablets.
