Isoflurane
Question: What's the difference of sevoflurane, Isoflurane, and enflurane? they are general anesthesia but what's the difference? How will the anesthesiologist know which one he/she will be using in a particular procedure?
Answer: sevoflurane is a sweet-smelling, non-flammable, highly fluorinated methyl isopropyl ether used for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia. Isoflurane is a halogenated ether used for inhalational anesthesia. enflutane is a halogenated ether that was commonly used for inhalational anesthesia during the 1970s and 1980s.
Question: Isoflurane gas protective mask? I am a veterinarian. In surgery we use isoflurane anesthetic gas. I am going to be pregnant soon and need a gas mask to protect myself and the baby during procedures but I can't find anyone who can tell me specifically what type of mask will block isoflurane gas. Anyone have any idea? Thanks!
Answer: i think u better search google and ask ur older friends who got pregnant what they would wear
Question: what would happen if i smell liquid isoflurane ?

**** Isoflurane is also known as FORANE .. it is inhalant anesthesia
Answer: OK drop this thing Sunny - no one is affected by a few whiffs of liquid isoflo, chlorform or any other anaesthetic agent.
You do know this is very weird don't you, and possibly unhealthy?

Question: what family of drugs does isoflurane belong to?
Answer: I did a google search for the information for you, and this is what I found.
What is isoflurane inhalation liquid? (Back to top)
ISOFLURANE (Forane®) is used for general anesthesia during surgery and cesarean section.

Question: Why do rats become ataxic during the induction of an inhaled anaesthetic? When using isoflurane as an anaesthetic, the rat becomes ataxic almost instantly. But I can't seem to find a physiological reason why? The best I can come up with is that the chemicals in the iso block the CNS, dis-allowing messages travelling from the brain to the rest of the body?

Question: Isoflurane and Sevoflurane Functional Groups? I am doing a project on Anesthesia and looking at the functional groups for Isoflurane and Sevoflurane ... I am then asked to explain what characteristics of functional groups make an organic compound lipophilic and what ones make a compound hydrophilic. Explain why these characteristics are lipophilic or hydrophilic????
I have spent hours looking into this and am honestly stumped ... any help please?
Thanks Tom but I am confused on the answer for functional groups ... my prof. said, "EXAMPLES of a functional group include -OH, -COOH." How would that line up with what you put for functional groups, am I missing something here?
Answer: Isoflurane functional groups: the halogens fluorine, chlorine, and an ether functional group.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isoflurane
Sevoflurane functional groups: There is an ether, 2 CF3's and 1 extra fluorine.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sevoflurane
lipohilic - means the compound will dissolve in a lipid.. this means that the compound is non-polar ! ! !
hydrophilic - means the compound will dissolve in a water solution... this means the compound is polar ! !
remember - like dissolves like, so in order for a compound to be lipophilic, it must be non polar, and vice-versa for hydrophilic (if a compound is hydrophilic that means it is polar and will dissolve in water)
polar just means that the compound has polarity.. it is an unequal charge left on the central atom, when it says that it is nonpolar, it means the charges on either side of the central atom have balanced out so there isn't any polarity.. or unequalness !
i have to go take care of something. i can explain more when i get back if you would like
** edit - i believe sevoflurane is hydrophilic where isoflurance is lipohilic
- a functional group is a covalently bonded group of atoms that behave as a unit in chemical reactions.. its the part of the atom that drives it to react the way it does.. in this case, the isoflurane would be known as an ether, an ether symbolizes a "R-O-R" group. the R's symbolize a Carbon (C) molecule with other atoms attached to it
Question: How safe it to spay a 10month old puppy? Her bloodwork came back great! Very healthy...
Worried about the anesthesia. How safe is isoflurane?
What kind of complications can there be?
Thank you tragedys!!
She is a dachshund
Answer: it is quite safe for puppies to be spayed
it is usually done 2 months after the 1st season
oflurane is very safe.
ask your vet if you have any worries
Question: How do I adjust the pressure of the scavenge line for (rat) isoflurane anesthesia? We have had problems with surgery .... rats are too light when put in a stereotaxic apparatus, even under 4-5% isoflurane. We think the nosecone adapter is allowing the scavenge line to collect the isoflurane/O2 mix before the rat receives it all. The animal is obviously under anesthesia, but remains far too reactive for our procedure. Any advice with parts that we could add (we have the scavenge line running to the activated charcoal box), or if this really sounds like the problem, would be greatly appreciated.
Answer: You'd have to be more descriptive with what your setup looks like. Is it a circle system or a Mapleson setup?
Question: Isoflurane? My friend is a veterinary nurse and last week they were administering gas to a dog and there was an inproper seal on the mask. She began to feel very groggy and as she described the room began to echo and she became wobbly. I am worried about the long term health issues associated with exposure and also about the laws related to protecting her against this happening again. She said it was no big deal cos she felt fine afer some fresh air, but she does have an arrythmia problem with her heart?
Answer: Isoflurane is a very safe gas. I'm a vet nurse, and we often get exposed to it with absolutely no ill effects. The smell makes some people feel sick, although it doesn't bother me at all. I would think your friend may have been feeling dizzy due to nausea. Presumably she has a doctor though, she should check with him if isoflurane exposure might cause a problem.
Really, the amount of isoflurane from a leaky mask is absolutely minute. Remember we use this gas on animals with severe heart conditions all the time, to no ill effect.
I must show my boss this question, he gets irritated because I always comment on things that result in isoflurane exposure, like removing the mask from the animal before turning the gas off! He has full confidence in the safety of isoflurane, and after 30 years of vet experience, I have to say I trust his views.
Don't be worried, just get your friend to check this with her doc.

Question: Is spaying a dachshund any different than spaying another kind of dog? Is this a safe surgery? My vet uses only Isoflurane. Pup is 9 months getting spayed April 2nd, had a blood test. Vet says all is well. She is healthy. However Urea is up a bit, might be from eating chicken night before and stealing cat food. I have removed the cat food so she can't steal it anymore. I heard that if there was kidney problems the urea and creatinine would be very high at the same time. Anyone know about this. My pup is not sick, I am not looking for what to do, just want some other opinions. Please be polite have had people being really rude on here. Thanks alot.
Answer: It sounds like you are ready and so is your pup.. if you have had the proper blood tests done she will be fine.. your vet seems to be informed and capable...iso is safer because they tend to wake up much faster and if there is any problems then they can do it ASAP... You vet seems to be informed.. go for it...good luck..smile
I also agree with the rude haters on answers.... they drive me a bit crazy when I have given a perfectly good answer and they dont agree or they are just not nice people they put down stupid answers or sick answers or thumbs down on everyone... its sad but it happens all the time...smile
Question: What else has a mildly pungent, musty smell? The other night I opened my bedroom door to this ethereal odor, research on the internet indicated it was Isoflurane. I wet a white towel put it on the trunk by the window in my bedroom. In the morning half of the towel was yellow. The half nearest the window.
It does not smell like marijuana, herbs or nail polish remover. These three do not smell at all alike.
Answer: Marijuana also has a musty, pungent sort of smell, as well as various other herbs. Also possibly nail polish remover.
Question: Help! my persian 8 year old cat is having a dental cleaning and extractions tomorrow.? I am very worried about the anesthesia, how risky is it? Had bloodwork done to see underlying conditions and she is fine. Vet is using isoflurane gas.I heard technicians usually take care of dentals, I wish the vet would doit!
Answer: As with any surgery there is always a risk when anestisia is used. I had a cat around that age who had the same surgery and he was fine. If your cat is in good health there really shouldn't be any problems. It is best to go ahead with this surgery as it will undoubtedly make your cat feel better afterwards. I hope this helped. Good luck!
Question: Anesthesia risks (Health professionals needed)? Does anyone know where I can find a good website that has information on occupational exposure to anesthesia (isoflurane) during pregnancy or when trying to conceive? I am a veterinary technician and spend 10-20 hours as an anesthetist at our practice. I ask because many doctors say it is safe during the 2nd trimester as long as the exposure is safely limited with a scavenger system. Our HR department is has said they must eliminate any exposure and I am not willing to give up my surgery days without a fight!

Question: chem quest? I need to use the solid & dashed wedge style of structure to draw two representations (of each) which result from isoflurane, halothane & desflurane being chiral molecules.
I'm having great difficulty accomplishing this aspect of my assignment. Please can anyone help me resolve this?
Thank you so much in advance for your help.
Answer: You might want to ask this in the Chemistry section instead - if you haven't already. I hope you find your answer.

I'm having great difficulty accomplishing this aspect of my assignment. Please can anyone help me resolve this?

Answer: In isoflurane, the carbon containing the chloride and oxygen bonds is the chiral carbon. Draw the structure twice, but in one, draw the C-Cl bond as a wedge and the C-H bond as dashed. In the other one, reverse them (C-Cl dashed, C-H wedged).
Similar in the other two. In desflurane, the chiral carbon has C-F, C-O, C-C and C-H bonds. The halothane chiral carbon has C-Br, C-Cl, C-C and C-H bonds. Draw two of them with the wedge-dashed symbols, exchanging them in the second structure.
Question: Safest procedure for cat's teeth cleaning? What is the safest procedure a vet should perform to a cat for teeth cleaning? One vet told me it is better to do a pre-surgical blood work , they use only IsoFlurane for anesthesia, feline dentistry with polish plus Oravet Plaque Treatment; another vet told me they don't need to perform any blood work test unless the cat is old or have problems, they will do a mix of IsoFlurane and regular anesthetic, won't apply any Plaque/tartar treatment after cleaning.....Which way should I go? What is the safest procedure? My cat is between 2-3 years old, his mouth looks pretty healthy but he has some tartar in the back teeth. Thank you!
Answer: I would go with the Vet that wants to do blood work. Your cat is young, so it could probably go without bloodwork, but if you can afford it then its best to be cautious.
Remeber every cat is different....When doing dental work, you want to make sure the cat is intubated and on Isoflurane. The vet will have to give an induction agent, which is a short acting injectable anesthetic, sedative and/or pain reliever in order to intubate the cat and get it on the Iso. This will all depend on the variable of the cat itself (which is where bloodwork can be important).
Make sure they have Dental Xray, thats very important. Some vets say they will take dental films, when all they do it take a skull xray. You want an actual Dental Xray, this way they can see whats going on below the gumline.
As long as xrays are taken, the teeth are cleaned and polished, they should be fine. My clinic tried the Oravet Treatment (I actually used it on my cat) and it was pretty useless. Just make sure after the procedure that you keep up with the brushing and regular dental maintance!
Good Luck!
ADD: about the Oravet...they can apply it at the hospital, but then you have to continue the treatments at home. Before application, any excess saliva needs to be wiped from your pets teeth and gums. You’re then supposed to open one of the 8 containers provided and put a generous amount on one of the disposable applicator brushes, or your finger because its easier.
With your pets mouth closed you put your finger or applicator inside your pets mouth and spread the gel on the front of her teeth and gums at the gum line.
When you’re done, you must throw away the applicator and any leftover gel from the one opened container.
First of all, its not easy to wipe the saliva off an animals teeth/mouth. Then when you apply it, it makes the animals salivate more, which defeats the purpose!
The gel is quite thick and feels like melted wax. I couldn’t imagine having such a product on my teeth. Just made me wonder how it was 1) going to adhere to the teeth for a week and 2) if it did adhere what kind of chemical was keeping it in place?
The kits are about 30 bucks. Seems like a waste. You are better off just getting a brushing routine in place. You have to apply the Oravet once a week at home.
Question: help with physics problem on magnetic field? In the operating room, anesthesiologists use mass spectrometers to monitor the respiratory gases of patients undergoing surgery. One gas that is often monitored is the anesthetic isoflurane (molecular mass = 3.06 10-25 kg). In a spectrometer, a singly ionized molecule of isoflurane (charge = +e) moves at a speed of 7200 m/s on a circular path that has a radius of 0.10 m. What is the magnitude of the magnetic field that the spectrometer uses?
Answer: omega = v/r
B = m*omega/q = 0.13751286 T
