Penicillamine
Question: WHAT IS THE RATIONALE BEHIND THE TREATMENT OF LEAD POISONING BY PENICILLAMINE?
Answer: Penicillamine chelates a variety of metals, including copper, lead, iron, and mercury, forming stable water soluble complexes that are excreted by the kidneys.
Chelants, are "chemicals that form soluble, complex molecules with certain metal ions, inactivating the ions so that they cannot normally react with other elements or ions to produce precipitates or scale."
Penicillamine is a pharmaceutical of the chelator class. It is sold under the trade names of Cuprimine and Depen. The pharmaceutical form is D-penicillamine, as L-penicillamine is toxic (it inhibits the action of pyridoxine). It is a metabolite of penicillin, although it has no antibiotic properties.
Hope that helps.
Question: tell me the side effects of the drug "penicillamine-D" on long term usage?
Answer: Impotency, this drug is another brand of anti-biotic.
Question: I live outside the U.S. and need to get Penicillamine.? Is there any way to buy this drug in the U.S. without prescription? I do not live in the U.S. but I cannot find the drug in my country.
Answer: I believe there are ways for you to do that, but they might be illegal. I have seen several ads on the internet that suggest selling medications without prescription and sending it to you over the mail. I don't recommend you do that, though. But it is possible.
Question: Have you known of a dog that recovered from Liver Disease? My dog (a bedlington terier, age 2) has a new diagnosis -
liver disease.
Her vet wants to do a biopsy to determine copper toxosis, which is most likely cos she's a bedlington.
I don't want a biopsy, my dog seems way too weak for anesthetic.
I heard there's a genetic test for this - anyone know how long tests take to get results back?
If it is copper, its treatable with penicillamine (long-term).
But, does anyone know a dog that's lived a long happy life after liver disease? Can dogs survive this?
Is there a chance or should I ease my dogs suffering?
I hate her feeling so ill, (apparently its like a permanent bad hangover) but don't want to give up if there's a chance she'll be her old jolly self again. She was one of those dogs people would go 'awh' at in the street, and she wouldn't say boo to a goose... Well ok, maybe the goose, but she is a terrier after all!
So, does anyone know of canine liver disease survivors? Can you give me hope? x
Answer: This is very sad in a dog so young.
I had a 9 year old Flatcoat who was diagnosed with liver disease and my Vet suggested that I put him on a very high carbohydrate diet with a very small amount of chicken.
He was very poorly and hardly had the strength to eat but I gave him 4 small meals per day of cooked pasta with a few pieces of cooked chicken breast and he did pick up for a while. Unfortunately, Flatcoats are known not to live much over the age of 10 and he did start to go downhill soon afterwards and we had to make the decision to have him put to sleep rather than let him suffer any longer.
Your dog is young and could survive liver disease because apparently by cutting down the protein and stepping up the carbohydrate this helps the liver to regenerate.
It is worth a try. Just feed him pasta, rice, bread and wholemeal biscuit with a very small amount of plain chicken and see if this will help. Don't give him anything fatty. Make sure he has plenty of water to drink.
I shall pray that he makes a good recovery.
Question: Can any one tell me if person suffering from Wilson's Disease can live a Normal life? I was diagnosed with Wilson's Disease along with my mother and my kid sister...
My mom's condition was worse hence we couldn't save her...
i have been taking Penicillamine since age 8 along with my sister .... my Kayser ring was detected at the time when my mom got sick 1st time and they had to check all family members for the disease...
Its been 13 years of strict diet and medicine...
i am not suffering from anything as mine was detectedd early...
but as now i am 21 and ready for a relationship... i am wondering if the disease can pass on to my children...so should i go ahead with a girl or should i not.... i dont wanna cheat anyone or ruin any one's life unno...
I know its genetic disease so it wont pass on to my spouse..but what chances are that it will pass on to my children or my grandchildren....plz help i am in crisis....
Does any one know person having healthy family even if she/he is affected with WD??
And i dont care about this next question actually but my gf would so i am asking ...how long i can live Normaly with my treatment??
please help...
Answer: its an autosomal recessive disorder, so if your future wife has normal genes, then your children will not develop Wilsons, but everyone of them will be carriers of the gene. and when your children get married, there is 50% chance that your grandchildren will be carriers, and 50% chance that the others have normal gene
those who are just carriers of the gene are symptomatic, but if they marry someone with wilsons or has the gene, their children may get wilsons
there isnt an exact data on the prognosis of wilsons overall as far as i know of, but there is data on the survival rate when a patient develops fulminant hepatitis from wilson's disease
you could see it in this page
http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/18…
if the liver disease is pre-cirrhotic, it may be reversible, but the neurological symptoms are less so irreversible.
death of patients usually is caused by liver failure, variceal hemorrhage or infection
Question: USMLE practice case question: What antidote should be given? A 3 y/o child was brought to the ER following the ingestion of several pills. The child is suffering from severe GI discomfort and has thrown up twice, each time producing bloody vomitus. The mother reveals the child got into the mother's old prenatal vitamins. What antidote should be given?
A) Dimercaprol
B) Deferoxamine
C) EDTA
D) Penicillamine
E) Succimer
Hm, I'm guessing B.) but anyone here actually, confident in their answer?
Answer: I believe you are right since prenatal vitamins contain ferrous sulfate or iron, which is quite irritating to the gastric mucosa and could cause bloody vomitus.
