Polymyxin B Sulfates
Question: My kitten is taking a medication called---? My kitten is having some eye problems and has been prescribed Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Dexamethasone Ophthalmic Ointment, which is some kind of anti bacterial ointment, and I've been told to rub it into both eyes twice a day, and its sort of like a gel type substance. I've been told to rub it directly onto the eye lid. Out of the 7 days that I am supposed to do this, it's been 3, and she still is squinting a lot, even more it seems than before. Could it be that its just healing, or is her constant squinting a bad sign? If anyone has any information that might be helpful please let me know as I would like to take her to the vet as soon as possible if something is wrong.
Answer: I hope the veterinarian prescribed those medicines in the first place! If not, get your kitten to the vet ASAP! If the vet prescribed these medicines, then you should have been given instructions as to how the kitten should react to the medicine. Good luck with your kitten!
Question: Fungal ear infection that just won't go away....help!!!! This has been a year long already....? I've had this fungal infection in my right ear for a YEAR now....literally, it started last Spring right around this time!! Not sure how I got it, I just know it's been bothering me for this past year.
I've tried ear drops from the doctor 3 times.....The first time, it worked and then the infection came back about a week later. Second time didn't work at all. This last time they gave me a different kind of ear drop plus antibiotics (in case I had an ear infection behind it). It actually worked and my symptoms went away....and then they came back about 2 weeks later :((.
I've thrown away several sets of ear phones for my iPod, but am wondering if this last set is still "infected" and I'm just putting the fungus back into my ear. I also wear a stethoscope for school, and am wondering if I've re-infected myself this way?
What should I do now?? I've been treated by my primary care doctor, should I go see an ENT?
My symptoms are drainage, crusty/irritated/red ear lobe, and itchiness. I have no ear pain or other issues...it never got worse or better in this past year that I had it. I'd just always wake up from sleeping with a crusty ear or I could literally feel the drainage.
Drops they gave me this last time that "helped" for the time being were combination of Neomycin, Polymyxin B Sulfates, and Hydrocortisone. I was to do 2 drops, 3 times daily, for one week. Every time they've prescribed ear drops it has only been for one week.....is this long enough??
Answer: You may want to see ENT or dermatology. If a culture has not been done, get one. Find out what bacteria or fungus you are dealing with. You may have some skin condition predisposing you to problems. Psoriasis and dandruff are common in the ear. Is the ear drum intact or is the drainage coming from there?
Question: Please Any VETRINARIANS or TECHS!? Earlier today my dog was outside, I brought him in and finished up my dishes. When I checked on him 1hr later, he had a really bad allergic reaction. His inner pink tear duct was really inflammed and reddish/pink. It was popping out of his eyelid. I have seen this happen once before and put Neo-Poly-Dex, which was his perscribed medicine since he always had eye allergies. I figured this would clear it up, and if it didn't I would call the Vet. Thank God, it did and now I put the reminder in his eye and it seems to not have subsided this time? Any idea what this could be? Also, my father is a Pharmacist, so he recommended I use Bausch & Lomb eye drops from now on. It has all the same ingredients as neopolydex only without the steriod. Which he says will eventually cause cataracts in his eyes. Is this correct, and am I safe using these replacement drops from now on? The ingredients are Neomycin, polymyxin B Sulfates and dexamethasone in the B & L eye drops. Thank You So much!!
Answer: As much as folks here would like to help, it is imposible to examine your dog over the net, and giving this kind of advice without examining the dog would be dangerous. I would give your vet a call iwth this question in the morning, as they would be more familiar with yur pup. Good luck.
Question: Will the thimerosal-containing, pregnancy category C eye drops I used for 19 days hurt my unborn baby? I am 7 weeks pregnant and have been using some Bausch & Lomb eye drops called "Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Gramicidin Ophthalmic Solution USP" for the past 19 days. I got the drops from my doctor, prior to knowing I was pregnant, in order to treat pink eye (conjunctivitis). The drops are prescription and were to be used for 5-7 days. My infection was not gone after 7 days so, figuring that I must have re-infected my eyes by using the same eye make-up I had prior to the infection, I continued to take the drops for another 12 days (stupid, I know).
Finally, this morning, my eyes were hurting and my vision was blurry. I came to the conclusion that the drops just were not working, even with my not wearing eye make-up. I started doing research on the drops and whether taking them for too long could result in the pink eye bacteria becoming resistant to the antibiotic. In my research, I was horrified to discover that the I drops I was taking were listed as a category c pregnancy medication... meaning that there are not enough scientific studies on the medications’ effect on a pregnant woman and her fetus to determine its safety during pregnancy.
Even worse, I discovered that the drops contain Thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative that has been linked to Autism. My oldest son has autism and I have been vigilantly avoiding any Thimerosal containing vaccines, etc. with both of my sons since finding out my oldest son's diagnosis.
I am so very sickened by this situation and worried about the health of my unborn baby. I am really hoping that someone can give me some hope. Please help!
Thanks in advance.
Answer: The majority of drug in the eye drop will stay in the eye. Only a tiny amount will be absorbed into the blood, if any.
Secondly, there is no evidence that thimerosal causes autism. The only evidence out there shows thimerosal might actually lower the incidence of autism. People like to ignore the study which showed autism rates in countries which thimerosal free vaccines have higher rates of autism than in countries with thimerosal vaccines.
The majority of drugs are category C. The way we determine if a drug is a tetragen is through studies with rats and in cases where pregnant women take the drug. There are no trials with pregnant women because it is unethical. They gave you an old antibiotic eye drop. If there were any issues with it; it would have come out by now.
It is way safer to have given you the eye drops than a regular oral antibiotic.
Question: Coughing problem what is it? So about a week ago I got a fever, I left it untreated and it went up to 102 then back down, then I got a ear infection as soon as it went away. The ear infection I have been having has been treated with anti biotics and Neomycin and polymyxin b sulfates. but anyways when i breath in a little too deep my more bottom area of my throat gets a little tingly which makes me have a mild cough, and sometimes its a little more stronger. i don't have a head ache or anything like that. but thats the only symptom. what is this?
Answer: well it's only been a week, so it still has time to maybe clear up but you might have fluid in your lungs. even though if you don't feel sick, you could have walking pneumonia. go to a dr and ask them to listen to your lungs, if it is they will prescribe you antibiotics that are super good and work withing a few days.
Question: red eyes very dry like sand is in them, itching and irritated been to reg doc and was given eye drops? neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates and dexamethasone eye drops. He does not have pink eye or anything in his eyes. Doctor does not know exactly what is wrong, suspects allergies. He has some allergies but , not bad. He said if it does not get better then he will have to go to eye doc maybe.
To any eye doc out there.....What could this be? I am not asking for a diagnosis but, mainly what kind of things could cause this? They have been like this for a month and a half and he has been on drops for 2 weeks, with very little to no releif.......THANKS
Answer: If his eyes don't get better soon, take him to an eye doctor. When I was a teen, my eye turned red, it mattered, especially at night, and it felt like I had sand in them. It turned out being herpes in the eye. Yes, the virus that causes cold sores on the lips can infect the eyes too if your immune system is run down. If herpes in the eye isn't treated immediately, you can lose your eye.
Question: PLEASE read my puppy is VERY sick and I'm SO scared.? I adopted a puppy from a women who saved him from a kennel. He looks to be full blooded German shepherd. He is probably 3 months old. She gave me some paper work from the kennel that I misplaced. I remember seeing that he did have a parvo shot. She said he did not have worms. Had been de-flead and recieved shots to prevent worms as well as had a checkup and xrays and was perfectly healthy EXCEPT he had, what she said was a "Respritory Infection". She gave me his medicine which now empty the meds are:
Liquid Doxacycline (vet wrote terrible on the bottle so I might misspell names) Directions were to give 1.3ml of it twice daily for 2 weeks for respiratory infection.
Second is Clavamox (amoxicillin) tablets. 21mg Dosage: One tablet orally twice daily for 2 weeks for repiratory infection.
Finally, "Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Dexamethasone Ophthalmic Suspention USP" it is a liquid. Directions: One drop in each nostril and each eye twice daily for 2 weeks.
His medicine is out. It was prescribed 4/15/11
Now, he DOES have worms. They are deffinately tape worms. His poo is normal to slightly runny. Most of his poo is nearly entirely COVERED in worms. Still moving worms.
He loves being loved but has little energy and usually chooses to hide under my bed.
Even when he comes out to be petted, he still tries to lay his head in your arms and even if you petting his butt, his eyes stay closed.
He DOES eat and he DOES drink but ONLY if I give him wet food.
He has frequent coughing spasms that seem to make him gag. He coughs up but usually swallows it down.
He had greenish discharge around the nose and somewhat watery eyes.
SOMETIMES he gets a little spunk and will chase my cat playfully but it doesn't last long.
He'll perk up a little if I offer some cheese or ham.
I am SO scared. I don't really have the money to pay a Vet bill up front but would be willing to make payments if that possible.
I looked up Kennel Cough and it said that it is incureable and must run it's course.
But still I am terrified I am going to lose this beautiful puppy.
Someone PLEASE help me.
Also, he lives indoors.

Answer: Kennel cough most certainly is NOT incurable. My dog got kennel cough from the vaccine and was treated for two weeks with antibiotics and was fine. Your dog may not get better without medication especially since he is weakened by worms. Worms almost always come from a dirty food bowl or dirty water.
Call your vet, tell him what has happened and perhaps he can prescribe more medication without a visit although most are hesitant to do that. Ask if he can arrange a payment plan.
This is something that must be considered when you adopt a pet. They need medical care from time to time. I don't mean to be harsh, but your being scared is not going to help that poor dog. You need to take action about getting him proper care.
Question: What to do about feeding issues? I have a kitten about 8-10 weeks. He is sick and will not eat or drink on his own (we have to force feed him).
I took him to the vet yesterday and was told he had feline herpes and was severely dehydrated. He was given Clavamox, chlorpheniramine maleate tabs, and and neomycin and polymyxin b sulfates and bacitacin zinc ophalmic ointment usp (each twice a day). He was also given electramine (which I have to give him so much every 2 hours).
The vet said that if he was feeling better he would start eating and drinking. I don't know how long that will be. Is there any food I need to give him or can give him? I haven't given him anything else besides the medicine since I took him to the vets and he hasn't really eaten anything since I got him about 5 days ago. He won't eat anything or drink anything on his own and its still worrying me. He turns his nose up at everything.
I don't want this little guy to die on me. He doesn't do much anything besides just sit in my lap and rest/sleep. Is there anything more I can do to help him?
Answer: "Try baby food(check the ingredients for onion powder, if it has it don't buy it) (we recommend the lamb, chicken or turkey flavors...start with lamb and stay with it if possible) works so well with kittens is that it is easy for them to lap up, but more importantly, it has a high degree of odor to it, which stimulates the kitten's appetite and encourages her to eat, when she is young or sick, and not able to smell properly or understand that she is hungry"
You can mix up some kmr with the baby food to make gruel.
Question: What is wrong with my cat? We came back from vacation two weeks ago, and our kitty had a swollen right-eye. At first we thought he got in a fight w/ one of the other household cats; we assumed he was okay because he was still acting like himself (purring, "kneading the bread," playful, etc). At about a week into it, his right eye got more swollen and seemed partially closed; furthermore, we could see the third eyelid was exposed. We took him into the vet at that point, and was given Clavamox antibiotic and Neomycin & Polymyxin B Sulfates & Bacitracin Zinc Opthalmic Ointment for his eye. We used it for about a week, but saw no progress; furthermore, his appetite seemed to have diminished.
At this point, we took him to another vet; this vet saw some additional symptoms, such as a protruding brow above the right eye and some kind of growth in the kitty's mouth. The second vet said it was likely one of the following (in this order): [1] lymphocytic plasmacytic legion, [2] Squamous Cell Carcinoma, [3] Bartonella infection, or [4] herpes. He prescribed some Zithromax in lieu of the Clavomax we were using. This vet said we should use the new prescriptions for about another week and if things don't seem to get better, we should come in and have the cat sedated for biopsy of the mouth growth and to have an eye specialist look at the enlarged brow.
We've been using this new prescription for three days, but now my cat's behavior is changing. He seems to walk aimlessly around the house in circles, like he's not sure where he is anymore. He's not eating on his own unless we ground up some chicken and put it right in his face. He's not reacting to our petting (e.g. purring or raising his back end when we scratch his lower back). Not playful, and can't even seem to sit in his normal "hen" position (his front legs tucked under his body). His body weight has gone down dramatically--from 14 pounds in 2006 to 12.1 pounds when we went to vet #1 two weeks ago, to 11.2 pounds with vet #2.
Does anyone out there have any ideas or suggestions?
I forgot to mention that he's been hiding away and sleeping in unusual (for him) location (e.g. the closet, under one of our futons, behind the hamper, etc.
Answer: i really would consider going to the vet if there is something wrong with your cat you should seriously consider that the internet bloggers can't dignose the problem if vets can't maybe try a new well know vet and dont take the same diognostics if YOU know they dont work
Question: What are the cloudy spots on my husky/lab puppies eyes? I have a 10 mo. old husky/yellow lab mix. About a mo. ago, he had a severe allergic reaction to something (we still don't know what to). His eyes were severely swollen. The vet cannot go near him because he is "growly" (my vet is one of the best, my puppy just will not let new people near him, so please no comments about my dogs aggression). The vet put him on Benadryl, prednisone, and Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates eye drops. His eyes cleared up within a matter of a couple of days. Now, he has "cloudy" or white spots on each eye. My sister thinks he might have the beginning stages of cataracts, but I'm not sure because he is so young (she also thinks he is aggressive towards others because of this). I am going to take him to the vet, but wanted other opinions first. It doesn't seem to bother him either, what could it be? From the drops? I'd appreciate any HELPFUL answers.
Answer: Take him to your vet. Muzzle him so your vet can really examine his eyes. This may be juvenile cataracts.
Question: I have an outer ear infection, and I have a few questions.? I have an outer ear infection. Today i finally went to the doctor, and i have some questions about the neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates and hydrocortisone I received. Did I do something wrong?
I took the drops today three times (poured four drops every time into my ear canal as instructed), and it started to get better, but now I hear stretchy sounds and my ear sounds kinda plugged up still. Not like it was when it was infected, but it sounds really annoying and prevents me from sleeping soundly.
Did I do something wrong? Infect it more, maybe?
Sometimes when I lay down (no matter in what position) my ear still bothers me, and I haven't slept much for a few days.
Of course, I have like two more days to use the rest of it... I just wanna make sure I'm doing things right :D. Am I on the right track to a full recovery?
Answer: Difficult one..can I ask..DID U, also put your finger or a cotton bud into the ear at some time.???
If so,
U may also have a build-up of WAX, which is what U appear to be describing. That has for some reason been pushed back more into the Inner drum of the ear.
Go to the Chemist/Drug store/Pharm,,and purchase a substance called WAXOL..Its very effective.
BUT don't have the Waxol in while the other med is in also..Space it out..in other words.
Question: I can't stop blinking my eyes.? lately, for the past two days, i have been blinking soooo much. Like twice every second. Literally. It feels my eyes are cold, and there is constant blowing. Like its the feeling when you stick your head out of the window in the car. It might just be the cold. Because here in Wisconsin, it's like almost 0 degrees.
I've been using some OTC eye drops, that don't help at all. I found in my parents medicine cabinet some type of eye drops. I don't know if they are eyedrops though. THey seem strong. They are called Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Gramicidin Opthalmic Solution USP. I'm afraid to take it cuz i don't nkow what it is. I need some relief is all.
Answer: I kind of had the same problem because i was constatnly blinking for no reason. I don't know if it was because i was nervous about something or what, but it eventually went away. I would also call your docter if it continues to do that for the next 3-5days.
Question: Fungal ear infection that just won't go away. Docs in the Medicine section, please please help!!!!?
Answer: Fungi grow in dark, moist environments. An ear canal full of wax and other debris such as shed skin is a good incubator. Your doc or the ENT can lavage out the debris and give you medication and advice how to keep the canal clean and dry. Often those measures alone will cure the condition.
A second lesser possibility is that you have a hole in your eardrum and a low grade middle ear infection is draining into the ear canal.
The reason I recommend an ENT specialist is that he/she will also check for a cholesteatoma (aka keratoma). This is not cancerous, but may impair hearing.
Question: Eye infections in Chickens? My rooster has an eye infection in both eyes. It started yesterday morning, and this morning, both eyes are giving off discharge and the entire area around them is swollen. So...I was wondering; I already have and am using eye salve ( on the tube it says Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Bacitracin Zinc Opthalmic Ointment USP Sterile) but is Visine safe for chickens? If so, it seems to help with swelling, so maybe it would help too. I do also have him on the antibiotic water supplements sold at TSC (Duramycin-10 Tetracycline Hydrochloride soluble powder). I really need to keep him seeing well enough to eat and drink until Monday or Tuesday when I can take him to the vet. (This is Saturday, and he is closed.)
Answer: YIKES
OK well NO to the Visine. Most Vets do have SAT hours 8-12 noon.. if you cant go in at least try calling them.
I asume you already have a VET and ar ento just looking for one.. Not all vets treat birds let alone chickens.
Whatever the infection your chicken has .. not all antibiotics will work to treat it it has to be an antibiotic that is specific to teh bacteria he has.
DO NOT use Visine.
IF he is not eating or drinknig well enough on his won you may need to help him .. also keeping him warm and quiet is good and away from other birds and in a very clean area where he cant injure himself at all if he does not see soething and fall or run into it.
Birds mask illness very well , My guess is your little guy is quit ill and everyday he does not get vet care is a risk.
I wouldnot wait any longer than you have too. the eyes infection may be a local one or a sign of a larger problem.
Also unless teh medicines you are using on this bird were prescribed by a vet be very careful... get calling around to local vets and places to get into if you cant get him in this weekend.
Then get him in on Monday ASAP.
Good luck and remeber try to keep him from being Stressed.
Question: EAR PIERCING INFECTION? i got my 2nd ear piercing (lobe) in november and it's been pretty much fine since for the most part. So for the past few days, it's been pussing. I cleaned it with antiseptic. But today when I woke out, it was pussing a lot. I cleaned it again and it still continued to puss. I took the piercing out and my ear and started bleeding a lot and then there was a huge hard lump in my ear lobe that bulges out of my ear lobe. It made my ear lobe (part of it) turn green/grey. I cleaned my ear with soap and antiseptic again and put the piercing back it because I didn't want it to close. There was a sharp pain and a bit of blood when i put it in. What should I do and what is the lump thing..? and should i put this Antibiotic Ointment that contains polymyxin b sulphate, bacitracin zinc, gramicidin and lidocaine?
I says it's to prevent infection and to help speed healing.
Would it close my piercing?
I live in Canada so we don't have Walgreens.
Also, it's more like a pinkish/purple, not a green grey anymore
Answer: hey i have the same problem sometimes, try WITCH HAZEL, itll clear up the infection really fast.. and its all natural so it doesnt burn!! You can get a big bottle of it at WALGREENS for about 5.99..
Good luck!!
Question: Having eye problems with my gang, anyone else experiencing this? OK about 2 weeks ago one of my Flat Coats started coming down with major eye buggers in one eye.
Not the hard ones but really snotty ones.
The next day it started watering and I thought perhaps an infection or just an eye cold so I applied this eye ointment I got from the vet on an earlier occasion mfg by Bausch and Lomb for one of my Aussies that had an irritation going on.
It cleared it up in a day or two but yesterday my other Flat Coat came down with something similar and this morning one of my Aussies has it as well in one of his eye`s.
Now it is Spring finally here in the North West, (Oregon) and the leaves are coming out and the trees are in bloom.
Looking at my glass top picnic table it`s covered in a light green dust I figure to be pollen. By the way I live in a forest.
Now I have lived here in Oregon since 2000 and yes the weather does dictate runny eye`s, cold, rainy, hot, etc. but this time it seems to be more of an irritation that I have not had to deal with before.
Do you think it could be the pollen getting into the wells of their eye`s?
I treated my 2 dogs that presently have it with the same ointment this morning.
Again it has no name on the tube but the ingredients are;
neomycin
polymyxin B sulphates
dexamethasone
and ophthalmic.
Do any vet techs or folks that live here in the NW have anything similar happening with their dogs?
As well do any of you treat with the same or something similar, and what?
No smart a** answers like go to your vet.
I just want to know if anyone else has or is experiencing anything similar, what their solution was and if I`m taking the appropriate steps
with what I`m using to clear it up.
If all else fails to the vet on Monday.
Good luck and God Bless
ADD;
OK this is a new one on me but can dogs get pink eye.
I`ve actually asked a couple of breeder friends of mine and they say no, but i wonder, hmmmmm
Answer: Interesting...........Pilot gets that "I want to say on and off" during the year....but, due to allergies, he seems to get them more at this time of year. This morning we were to be on a flight to Peru, but instead it was delayed till the PM hrs. So, my hubby ran Pilot over to his Vet for our YEARLY run for small hot spots. It seems to be a regular run to the Dr., consistantly every year at this same time.....and month!
SO.......I am guessing that either they have "pink eye"....contageous, and/or they are experiencing an allergic reaction to something in bloom, in your area. The forest holds many blooms this time of year as we all know.
The gunk that Pilot gets is slimy, rather blackish from the dirt or dust, and I am forever cleaning out his eyes consistantly, every day or two. Though it comes in rather smaller "chunks", (sorry for the description... LOL!!), this time of year promotes larger ones due to the many buds, blooms, and new grass growth.
Help in any way? I sure hope so, or at least it will give you something to ponder over.
Have a wonderful day. :oPilot and I
Question: Antibiotics effect on Mirena IUD? I recently got an ear infection, and I'm taking Optimyxin ear/eye drops to combat the problem along with Tylenol. the Optimyxin eye/ear drops contain : polymyxin B (as sulfate) gramicidin and benzalkonium chloride . I am wondering because the box is labling the product as being an antibiotic will this effect the reliablity of my birthcontrol. I am also on my peroid as of now. I`ve heard that antibiotics will affect `the pill` However I would like to know if they will effect my Mirena IUD.
Just to make my self clear. I am NOT looking for a new antibiotics to clear up my ear infection, what I`m using now owrks fine. I would like to know if my antibiotic will effect my birthcontrol.
Answer: Although your ear/eye drops are an antibiotic, they are a topical antibiotic, meaning that their absorption into your blood stream is minimal. The ointment you're using is very similar to Triple Antibiotic or other over-the-counter topical antibiotics, except your product is specifically formulated for the eye.
Mirena does have a progestin hormone in it, and antibiotics can affect how well it works, but the antibiotic you're taking won't get into the blood stream to cause an interaction. Although the risk doesn't really exist, if you're still worried about it, you can always use backup protection (condom) for the month that you're using the antibiotic.

Answer: I don't think this moves anyone to accept the grace and love Christ freely offers.
Question: Can i use this instead of neosporin? I cut offs skin tag and iI want to put neosporin on it but we dont hve any. I looked around the house and found something called fougera and it says "triple antibiotic ointment (neomycin and polymyxin b sulfates and bacitracin zinc ointment USO) uses: first aid to help prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes, Burns" sounds like I can use it right?
Answer: you should be fine
Question: Can you use Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates on a dog? He seems to have an experienced an ear infection
Answer: You can but it probably will do no good. Neomycin and Polymyxin have limited effectiveness on the bacteria that causes ear infections. Get Zymox Otic. It treats bacterial and yeast infections of the ear. It is better than anything I have bought from a vet. It is available online and at some independent pet supply stores.
