Polymyxin
Question: Between polymyxin and cetrimide antibiotics, which is more effective? How were you able to tell?
Answer: To tell the difference in effectiveness of one antibiotic over another you need to perform an MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration) assay. Grow your organism (bacteria/fungi) in 2-fold serial dilutions of the antibiotics. The lowest concentration that inhibits the growth of your organism is the MIC for that antibiotic. The results will be very different for different organisms, so you need to test each organism individually to determine which compound has the lowest MIC and would therefore be the most effective.
Question: If I am allergic to neomycin will I be allergic to polymyxin as well? Btw, I was prescribed polymyxin in an opthalmic solution
Answer: Not necessarily. Allergy to one should not make a difference, but you will have to try it to see.
Question: Why does my left ear hurt after using Hydrocortisone, neomycin, and polymyxin? Hi, my eustation tube made my ears feel as if it needs to be popped.
so i recently used Hydrocortisone, neomycin, and polymyxin on both ears and my left ear hurts a little, and feel some presure. im really scared and i hope i dont get deaf.
and my left side of my throat/tongue feels swollen...
it kinda hurts my left ear if i swallow :(
And yes, this was prescribed to me
Answer: You're not going deaf, but you need to stop putting things in your ear that weren't prescribed for it.
Your ear was bothering you, so you used medications, and now your ear still bothers you and hurts when you swallow, and your throat and tongue feel swollen, right? You need to see the doctor for diagnosis and treatment. It sounds like you have an ear infection. Feel better soon, and don't put anything else in your ear :-)
Question: has anyone ever use the medicine neomycin and polymyxin for cherry eye if so does it work ?
Answer: Sometimes a cherry eye will come and go on its own, especially in breeds with "slack" in their third eyelids, like bulldogs. An ointment with an anti-inflammatory (like hydrocortisone or dexamethasone) in it may help; several ointments do combine neomycin-polymyxin with a steroid anti-inflammatory drug. I don't know how a straight antibiotic ointment really would help, because it is not a problem with infection.
Question: my 1 year old pom dog ate some terramycin with polymyxin help? i was taking a bath and when i came out i found the terramycin with poly all chewed up by my pom.
i am WORRIED SICK.
please help.
Answer: It's an antibiotic used to treat eye infections. Just watch for any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat/eye/eyelid), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
If you notice any of them get your dog to a vet.
Question: Can I put trimethroprim sulfate and polymyxin sulfate (also known as Polytrim) eye drops in my dog's eyes?
Answer: Absolutely not! This has cautions even for people and if you suspect your dog has an eye infection, instead of fooling around with its eyesight, you get the dog in to the vet for correct treatment!
Question: does polymyxin contain penicillin? i have these ear drops that contain neomycin polymixin hc. and im allergic to penicillin should i use these?
Answer: no
Question: What are nonprescription antibiotic ointments for small pets? The first vet prescribed TriOptic-P for an injured gerbil. The next one (different gerbil) prescribed NeoMycin and Polymyxin for the bite. I'd like to find a non-prescription ointment that works the same. Both are meant for something completely different but used as an antibiotic ointments for small animals.
Answer: Pet stores such as Petco or Petsmart don't usually sell ointments for small animals in their stores. They will sell syringes, newborn puppy/kitten formulas and Quick Stop products, but that's about it. For small animals, the closest thing I've seen to an ointment, would be vitamins for guinea pigs.
Your veterinarian is really the only person who can provide you with the right ointments for your rodents. It's the veterinarian's job to sell the ointments, not the chain stores, as these products could be miss-used if given to anyone to buy.
I know this probably doesn't answer your question as well as you hoped, but it's the best I could do. Talk to your veterinarian about the ointments if you have further questions. They'll be more than happy to answer any you have.
Question: What is polymyxin E?
Answer: The polymyxin class antimicrobial agents (colistin or polymyxin E and polymyxin B) are polycationic peptides that were originally synthesized from Bacillus polymyxus.
The mechanism of action for the polymyxins has been determined to be secondary to surfactant-like properties that produce enhanced permeability of the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane, leading to bacterial death. These agents were first described more than five decades ago and were initially applied to therapy for gram-negative bacillary infections before the discovery of other broad-spectrum agents, such as the aminoglycosides, carboxypenicillins, and cephalosporins. Toxicity issues and the emergence of alternative antimicrobial regimens resulted in the elimination of colistin and polymyxin B from being used internally.
Polymyxins are used today for Dermatology (skin) treatment, Ear and Ophthalmology (eye).
Question: Describe the mode of action of each of the following antibiotics? And explain what effect each one may have on host cells. Give an example of an organism that would be effectively treated for each drug.
Penicillin
Indinavir
Erythromycin
polymyxin B
Answer: penicillin - synthesis of cell wall - penicillin binding protein, inhibits cross linkin of peptidoglycan (Staphylococcus)
Indinavir - it's a protease inhibitor, an antiviral (was used in HIV infections)
erythromycin - binds to ribosome blocking peptide synthesis (a wide spectrum for example Treponema sp.)
Polymyxin B - causes membrane leakage, it's a cationic detergent (active on gram negative bacteria like Salmonella)
Question: whats the diffence in these medicines? I have two kids one born april 7 2005 and the other born april 7 2006. one is 27lbs the other is 19lbs they both have an infection in their eyes. But one was given gentamicin and the other was given polymyxin. Whats the difference?
I know I spelled difference wrong. My bad.
Answer: There's not much difference between those two. They're both pretty straightforward antibiotics. No doubt the doc must have had a reason for giving different drugs based on their different sizes.
They have the same birthday? How cool is that? :)
Question: can i use triple antibiotic ointment to treat a stye? it has bacitracin, neomycin, and polymyxin...
i've heard that you can use neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment to treat a stye since its caused by a bacterial infection but i'm not so sure....
Answer: No.
The medical term for a sty is hordeolum (plural, hordeola).
A sty results from an acute infection of the oil glands of the eyelid (meibomian glands) occurs after these glands have become clogged. The bacterium Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for 90%-95% of cases of styes.
A sty is harmless in the majority of cases. In most cases, a sty ruptures on its own within a few days to a week, leading to relief from symptoms.
Application of a warm compress or warm washcloth to the affected area for 10 minutes, four to six times a day, can speed rupture of the sty and aid in the relief of symptoms.
A sty should not be pressed or squeezed.

Question: Are there any over the counter medicines to help with my outer ear infection.? I went to the doctor today and he gave me some drops and Antibiotics. He gave me Neo/polymyxin/hc. I am in severe pain. He did not give me any pain medicine. I have tried. Aleve, naproxen, tylenol. Nothing works. Is there anything that I can buy that will numb the ear. over the counter. Because I have a jack leg of a doctor and will not give me anything for the pain. It seem that these ear drops are doing nothing.
ALSO!!!!! HE ONLY GAVE ME 3 DAYS WORTH OF MEDICINE. AZITHROMYCIN 500MG (3 PILLS) IS THIS ENOUGH
Answer: Not in the US. I had the same thing and the pain went down real quick with the drops. Might want to see another doctor if your not getting better after 5 - 7 days on antibiotics.
Question: Which of the following antibiotics is recommended for use against gram-negative bacteria? A. Polyenes
B. Bacitracin
C. cephalosporin
D. Penicillin
E. Polymyxin
Answer: Cephalosporins can be used against gram positive cocci (not enterococci) and some gram negative bacilli.
I doubt that straight bacitracin and polymyxin (i think polymixin is predominantly a polyene) are used much anymore (quite toxic).
Penicillins are mainly for gram positives.
So C is the best answer. It is routinely used as gram negative prophylaxis and treatment.

Question: mode of action and target organisms of the following??? kanamycin, polymyxin, streptomycin, ampicillin, penicillin, bacitracin, aureomycin??
Answer: Kanamycin -disruption of protein synthesis
-effective against aerobic gram-negative bacilli and some gram-positive bacteria, including mycobacteria
Polymyxin -disruption of cell membrane by interacting with its phospholipids
-have a bactericidal effect on Gram-negative bacilli, especially on Pseudomonas and coliform organisms
Streptomycin -binds to the 16S rRNA of the bacterial ribosome, interfering with the binding of formyl-methionyl-tRNA to the 30S subunit. This prevents initiation of protein synthesis
-inhibits both gram positive and gram negative bacteria, and is a therefore a useful broad spectrum antibiotic
Ampicillin and penicillin -inhibits cell wall synthesis
-treat urinary tract infections, otitis media, uncomplicated community-acquired pneumonia, Haemophilus influenzae, salmonellosis and Listeria meningitis. It is used with flucloxacillin in the combination antibiotic co-fluampicil for empiric treatment of cellulitis; providing cover against Group A streptococcal infection whilst the flucloxacillin acts against the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium. Of concern is the number of bacteria that become resistant to Ampicillin necessitating combination therapy or use of other antibiotics.
All Pseudomonas and most strains of Klebsiella and Aerobacter are considered resistant.
Bacitracin -Bacitracin interferes with the dephosphorylation of the C55-isoprenyl pyrophosphate, a molecule which carries the building blocks of the peptidoglycan bacterial cell wall outside of the inner membrane
-gram positive bacteria
Aureomycin -inhibits protein synthesis
-broad-spectrum antibiotic
Question: BIOLOGY. HARD QUESTION........? After a trip to the beach, John developed a painful coldsore on his lip. Earlier in the semester, the school nurse had given him a tube of polymyxin to treat an infected cat scratch on his hand. He decided to apply the polymyxin to his lip, but after 4 days saw no improvement. Why did he fail to see improvement?
Answer: Polymyxin is an antibiotic - it works against bacteria.
Cold sores are caused by Herpes Simplex virus, and antibiotics are completely ineffective against them. However, antivirals, like acyclovir cream, will work.
Question: toddler with pink eye.....? My daughter is 17 months old and she has pink eye. I just picked up the drops and instructions say to keep eye closed for 1 to 2 mins (and don't blink) How can I do this with her or does it really matter. The drops are Polymyxin. How long does it take for symptoms to go away? THANKS
Answer: It's unlikely that a toddler will keep her eyes closed for that long. As long as the medicine is getting in her eye, then it's ok. Have your child lie on her back and shut her eyes as tight as she can. Place one to two drops in the inner corner of each eye. Tell her to relax her eyes. Wipe off the excess with a clean cloth or tissue. My daughter had to have eye drops when she was only a year old and it was horrible getting hers in, but you'll manage.
Question: PLEASE HELP BIOLOGY QUESTION? After a trip to the beach, John developed a painful coldsore on his lip. Earlier in the semester, the school nurse had given him a tube of polymyxin to treat an infected cat scratch on his hand. He decided to apply the polymyxin to his lip, but after 4 days saw no improvement. Why did he fail to see improvement?
A beginning microbiology student accidentally transferred bacteria during the Death phase of growth instead of the Log phase as the professor had instructed. Later as he relaxed in his dorm room, he realized that he had made a mistake. He rushed back to the laboratory to redo his work. He saw, however, that his culture that had been transferred during the death phase was growing well. What is the most like explanation for the growth?
Answer: because a cold sore is from a similar strain of viral infections as herpes, while the cat scratch would have been infected because of bacteria, and in the kingdoms viruses aren't part of any kingdom - however are closest to protista, but bacteria almost solely fills the monera kingdom, showing that from early on in their taxonomic classification they are two completely different things and need to be treated differently :)
Question: ear infection relief?!? So I started getting insane pain in my ear, followed promptly thereafter by a swollen ear. I went to the dr. as soon as I could and she said I have a middle ear infection (but I was so swollen she couldn't see down to the eardrum). I was prescribed antibiotic drops (neomycin, polymyxin b, hyrdrocortisone), motrin for swelling and vicodin for pain. I've been on the regime since monday afternoon, it is now wednesday night, and my ear is still swollen, my hearing is still very muffled. When will the relief come, and does anyone have suggestions to help? It doesn't hurt (i'm not taking the vicodin unless ABSOLUTELY necessary- ive only had 1).
No, the medication seems to be working its way in. But the swelling is driving me insane. She said if the muffled sound in my ear doesn't go away, they will have to flush out my ear. She didn't do it at my last appt. because I was in so much pain.
Answer: hot pack it now.
tomorrow call the doctor and ask why you're not responding to the medication. You should have had results in 24 to 48 hours better than you have had.
