Sodium Chloride Injection
Question: How long will it take to complete an IV infusion of 1.5 L of 0.9% Sodium chloride injection being administered? at 45 drops/minute? The IV set is calibrated to deliver 15 drops per ml.
Answer: 1.5l = 1500ml
How many drops in 1.5l
1500ml * 15drops/ml = 22500drops
How many min at 45drops/min [remember, 45drops/min is the same as 1min/45drops]
22500drops * 1min/45drops = 500min
Question: Difference between Sodium Chloride BP injection & Water for injection? I am curious why are both used to dilute medications?
I am quite certain that Water for Injection is used to dilute medications, but why would a nurse use NaCl at the same time?
Can we not used NaCl to dilute medications?
I have read the 1st reply below. thanks!
But i have read that because we should not use water for injection to flush a vein, what is the difference then when we using water for injection to dilute an antibiotic , which still gets adminstered into vein anyway?
Answer: Some medicines are incompatable in certain solutions. Some things need to be mixed in 0.9 NaCl versus Sterile water based on what the med is.....If you mix it in the worng solution, it can make it unstable. Usually anything that can be mixed in one can be mixed in the other....they are usually interchangeable...0.9 NaCl is used to flush most lines, both before and after med administration
Question: how many millimoles of sodium chloride are there in a 10ml ampoule of sodium chloride 30% injection? molecular weight of sodium chloride=58.5g
a millimole is a thousandth of a mole thus the molecular weight in mg.
a millimole of sodium chloride is 58.5mg.
Answer: plzzzzzzz ask this question to chemist not to a mathematician
Question: ran out of contact solution, BUT?have a tube of .9% sodium chloride injection? preservative latex sterile...free...can i store my contacts in this over night???
Or would it be better to just use water?
Answer: Yep. Saline should be fine.
Edit:
Saline is better. The Chlorine in tap water is horrible. Besides, when in doubt, always go sterile.
Question: I found a 0.9% sodium chloride injection sterile solution tube in my boyfriends car. What is this? Why does he have this and what is he using it for?
I can't ask him about it becuase we just starting dating and i dont want to be annoying and in his buisness. He might think i was going through his car if i told him but i looked down and saw it while he wasnt there.
The tube that i found it in looks just like an injection of something you would get when you got blood taken or got a shit. there was no needle on the tip when i found it. It also says on the bottle, "normal saline"
If it has something to do with drugs i dont want to date him anymore. So i want to find out fast. If it matters he is 18 years old
Answer: Hmm, you should definetly ask him about it
Maybe some type of drug use?

Question: expired USP/0.9% Sodium Chloride on cancer patient IV? My uncle is a stomach cancer patient, in stage IV, unfortunately the cancer keeps advancing and leaving him weaker. Today we took him to the doctor since he was getting more dehydrated and a nurse gave him an injection of USP/0.9% Sodium Chloride, however it expired March 2008. I asked her why she was administering an expired solution, and she said it posed no problem and wouldn't affect him.
Now I'm not a doctor or a nurse, but considering he's a cancer patient in the last stage...wouldn't an expired injection such as USP/0.9% Sodium Chloride be hazardous?
and if not hazardous, affect him in some way?
Answer: I'm very surprised she used an expired IV solution on your uncle but it should pose no threat. 0.9 % sodium chloride is normally call normal saline. It is used to dilute another medication be administering. As long as the other medication was still good, there should be no problem.
Question: How many grams of sodium chloride injection are in the vial? I have a pharmacy technician homework i needed help with. Will someone please help me solve it and tell me the steps of how.
You have in stock 30ml vial of 23.4% concentrated Sodium Chloride injection.
a. How many grams of sodium chloride are in the vial?
b. How many mg are in 1ml?
Thanks for your help....
Answer: 23.4% = 23.4gm/100ml
a) 23.4gm/100ml = x gm/30ml
x gm = (23.4gm * 30ml) / 100ml
x = 7.02gm
b) 1gm = 1000mg
so 23.4gm = 23400mg
23400mg/100ml = x mg/1ml
x mg = (23400mg * 1ml) / 100ml
x = 234mg
Question: is sodium chloride better than water for injections?
Answer: It depends on what the substance is that you are injecting. I personally prefer a saline water solution but if the substance that you are injecting is oil baised than water will not work but any other time I personally would use water. Just be sure that its sterile and you will be fine.
Question: is .9% sodim chloride for external use the same as the one they use for injections? what is the difference between .9% Sodium Chloride that you use for injections then the one you use for cleanning wound?
Answer: I assume its 0.9% Sodium chloride.
Your right , its the same thing.
We use it to flush cannulas etc and its used to irrigate wounds (clean) etc.
Question: Is the Lorazepam injection more effective? I have been prescribed .05mg pill of Lorazepam orally 4x day for anxiety and insomnia. I have a PICC line in me because of a pseudomonius infection and take my meds through that. Can I grind up the tiny Lorazepam and add that with the sodium chloride - on slow drip? Or is that a major NO-NO in the IV community?
Answer: No, no !! Everything enters your body through intra muscularly or intravenously have to be sterile. Pills aren't sterile. Please don't even attempt to do that. You can come down with toxic whole body infection and can be fatal !!
Question: About my snake bite piercing? please help? So i got my snake bite piercing a few days back,
i tried to eat solid food, but the labret stud with flat back keep hooking over my lower teeth making it harder to chew.
Recently only one side [inside of my lips] the skin is covering the flat back and i have to pull the skin away from it
[ i assume cos its swollen? ]
Now occasionally my tongue get stuck in between my lower teeth ?i don't know if my piercing has affected it or what ?
So i want to know..
1. What type of food should i eat currently?
2. Is it okay to use sodium chloride injection on the outer part of my lips? and for the inside use non-alcoholic mouth wash?
3. my lips gets dryer and i even peel the skin till it bleed so what should i do ? [i tried to lick my lips to moist it.]
4. Only one side of my lips is slightly swollen is that normal? lol
5. How long do i have to wait till i can start eating comfortably ?
Please help,
Thanks in advances.
Answer: ive had mine for 4 years....
1. dont lick ur lips put chapstick on them its better for your piercings.. get chapstick that has vitamin E in it..
2. yes ur lips will be swollen, one side could also heal faster than the other this is normal. but if the swelling wont go down try switching to a longer labret bar, it should take the pressure off ur lip
3. you should be able to eat everything exept for foods like hamburgers and tacos lol it should only hurt for 2 weeks
4. try not to play with them because that will only cause irritaion and can cause an infection.
5. i would use a swab on the out side and use dial soap that works best and yes use non alcohlic mouth wash for the inside
Question: Little help with my infection biology work? I'm after a little help with my college coursework. i have no idea how to design the experiment
thanks
CFF1 is a new strain of bacteria which causes sickness and weight loss in humans.
CFF1 also causes similar illness in experimental laboratory mice and its effects are noticeable after 24 hours with weight loss being evident after 2 weeks.
CFF1 can be cultured on petri dishes. It starts growing as small individual colonies which can be counted and their diameter measured.
Bacteria which grow well will produce more colonies per day and the size of colony will be bigger. Cultures are normally run for 5 days.
The Agar is made up as a 10% solution of agar powder dissolved in water at about 60oC.
10 ml of agar is required per culture plate.
Jambavine is a new compound which has antibiotic activity.
It has low solubility and must be dissolved in 50% ethanol first (at 0.2 g/ml ethanol) before adding to either culture medium (agar) or 0.85% sodium chloride (for injection into animals).
A standard stock solution of Jambavine would be a final concentration of 1mg/ml in either agar or 0.85% sodium chloride (NaCl)
Design an experiment which will determine whether Jambavine is effective against CFF1 in vitro and at what doses. In your experiment list the amounts of agar that you will require (powdered form) and describe how you would make up the agar plates. Consider what numbers of plates you would require for each concentration (dose) of drug and what you would measure to establish whether the drug had any effects. Also consider what controls you would use.
Design an expetiment to test whether Jambavine can reduce the effects of CFF1 in laboratory mice (in vivo) and at what dose. Assume that you have 40 mice (equal numbers male and female) which have been infected with CFF1 the previous day and 40 mice which are not infected. In both in vivo and in vitro experiments your starting concentration (maximum dose) should be 1mg/ml. Animals can be injected with 0.1ml of solution.
Consider what controls you would use.
Consider what statistical tests you might use to test whether there is a significant effect of the drug on the bacteria.
If the agar costs $25 per 100g; mice cost $5 each and $2.50 per day to keep; Novozol costs $500 per gram, Work out what it would cost to do both experiments.
thanks
Answer: Oh my gosh. I always seem to get questions like this when I am falling asleep... So I cannot think very clearly. But... you would make dilutions of the Jambavine agar, something like 100%, 10%, 1%, and 0% for the control, and let them harden, then add the same concentration of bacteria to each. You'd also make serial dilutions, 100% down to 0%, of the Jambavine in saline and then inject the same volume of each into mice, both infected and not. I cannot think any more, but it comes down to numbers and statistics. You can do it, you can be careful and plan it out and add up the costs.
Question: A little help with my experimental design work please? I'm after a little help with my college coursework. i have no idea how to design the experiment

Answer: what is the difficulty? It is all pretty well explained. You will have a control experiment with agar plates plus tests in which you will determine at what concentration your antibiotic is effective. You will add various concentrations of your antibiotic to agar plates and will determine how many colonies and how large they are under the different conditions after spreading the bacteria on them. You know what the maximum concentration of your antibiotic should be. You will do an experiment using agar plates and you will do an experiment using mice. I think there is a typo at the end, I think the Novozol is meant to read Jambavine.
But nobody here is going to write a long and elaborate protocol for you, (you are not asking for a little help, you seem to ask to do an hour long task for you).
That is what you are at college to learn. Somebody is paying the tuition fee for you, so your obligation towards that person is to work at least 40 hours a week at your degree. If you have difficulties I would recommend to meet with some fellow students and work it out together. This question looks to me like you have good and thoughtful instructors who went to some trouble to think up meaningful things for you to do. You should also be able to ask them for additional help if you get stuck. If you have absolutely no idea where to start you probably need to spend a lot of time catching up on the class.
Question: is sterile water for injection Rx only? According to my local pharmacy normal saline (0.9% NaCl) nonpyrogenic for injection is Rx only. I am curious as to why this is because its nothing more than sterile salt water. Oh and if you're wondering what the inspiration for this question is, I have a close friend in substance abuse recovery who is battling addiction. Unfortunately she also has a rather strong predilection for needles and is wondering if she can inject saline or sterile water to satisfy the needle craving so she can battle her problems one at a time. Oh and yes I understand sterile water would be hypotonic without an appropriate amount of Sodium Chloride being added to reach an isotonic level. However, since the actual volumes will be rather minute she is just concerned with being able to use any non addictive and safe (read sterile, not tap water) liquid until she feels comfortable in kicking the needles too. Thank you all in advance.
Answer: The only reason I can think of for having it be RX only be due to the danger of unskilled people using the needles themselves.
If you need a saline solution, do not try making one up yourself. Go to the pharmacy and pick up a bottle of it. It comes bottled, after all. Insure you do the correct calculations to make the saline the correct amount if it is not prebottled that way. It is imperative that the dosage is correct. If you already know about the terminology, I'm sure you understand...
It can't be any worse than what she's been injecting before, right? I'm sure most of that stuff was not made with sterile water.
Using needles in general is not a good idea and I will say I strongly recommend against it.. Just for the records so I can say I said it.
Good luck...
Question: navel piercing aftercare? I've just got my navel pierced today and I need to clear a few questions
1. How similar/different is sea salt and saline? Which is better?
2. I bought 10ml bottles of 0.9% sodium chloride (saline) for injection version from B Braun. Is it suitable for cleaning the piercing? If no, please give other suggestions.
3. Some websites say clean once a day, others say twice. So how to I go about it for the initial few days and after that?
4. Zinc and some vitamins are said to speed the healing process. So how much of it should I take (regarding the dosage eg. - ?mg / day) and which vitamin help?
5. Any fruits that provide the requirements above in point 4? and will taking supplements be just as good if I'm unable to find those fruits?
6. My piercing doesn't leave much space for swelling. Do navel piercings usually swell a lot and will there be a problem with this if I take care of it properly?
I'm in Singapore so certain items may not be sold here.
Thanks in advance!
Answer: Saline is just water with salt in it. The packaged saline from the drug store has the advantage of being sterile until it's open. However you can't control its concentration the way you can if you mix sea salt soaks yourself.
I'm not sure on the concentration of the solution you have already purchased, but odds are it should be safe. My best sugestion for testing it out is to taste it. It should barely taste like salt if at all. You may be able to smell the salt more than taste it depending on how sharp your nose is. The solution should definately not be saltier than tears.
If you want to make your own sea salt solution, mix 1/4-1/8 teaspoons sea salt with 8oz of warm water. You can mix this up in larger batches if you wish, but I prefer making mine fresh so I don't need to worry about contaminating a big container.
Small disposable bathroom cups usually come in a 3.5 ounce size, so filling one of those and adding a little less than 1/8 teaspoon of salt creates a manageable amount of solution . You could also use any other small glass that you knew the size of in ounces.
Usually piercers recommend cleaning with saline 2-3 times a day. Also rinse the area if you become particularly sweaty or dirty. Be sure to keep your hands away from the area aside from cleaning since hands can introduce germs.
As for vitamins, eating a balanced diet is usually sufficient for healing a piercing. If you wanted to take an extra step, taking a regular daily multivitamin should be more than enough help. The daily recommended doses of vitamins depend on your age and government regulations.
Usually navel piercings do not swell. It may be a little puffy the first few days after the piercing procedure or if the piercing gets injured (like caught on clothes, etc) later. It is unlikely that you would need a barbell to accomodate swelling, you just need a little extra space on the jewelry for cleaning. It would be unsual, but if you notice that the jewelry appears tight, go back to your piercer and have them assist you.
As long as you follow your cleaning directions, and otherwise leave the area alone you should heal up just fine. Always return to your piercer with any unexpected problems or questions. Best of luck =)
Question: Why aren't animals anesthesized? I'm against meat-eating, but if you want to argue your 'right' to eat meat, why not at least do this? Convicted murderers on death row are anesthesized before lethal injection (sodium pentothal, followed by pancuronium bromide and potassium chloride). We are able to be humane to convicted killers, but not innocent animals?
Sodium pentothal is the anesthetic. Potassium chloride is the actual lethal injection as it stops the heart.
I'm sure we could find an anesthetic that would dissipate or rapidly break down in the meat.
Answer: because it costs too much money to waste that crap. whos gunna stop them from not using anesthesia? exaclty, stfu.
