Trimethoprim
Question: How long does antibiotic trimethoprim stay in your system? I've was given a 3 day course of trimethoprim 200mg twice a day. They made me feel pretty bad. How long after taking the last dose will they stay in my system and when will the side effects subside.
Answer: Usually 24-48 hours after the last dose. Make sure you discuss this with your GP as if you did have bad side effect from the tablets you want it put on your records so you get prescribed a different antibiotic in future if possible.
Are you sure it wasn't your illness (urine infection or whatever they were prescribed for) that made you feel bad?
Question: How long does it take antibiotics (Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole) to start working? I started getting sick almost 2 weeks ago with cold like symptoms. I went to my doctor this past Tuesday and got prescribed an antibiotic (Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole). I still have to blow my nose every 5 minutes. I have been taking it for 2 days now. How long does it usually take before it starts clearing me up?
Answer: The antibiotic works immediately to destroy 3/4 of your immune system, your intestinal flora (friendly bacteria in your intestines). So the answer is immediate. Antibiotics cause the body to make macrophages that attack bacteria by eating them and then the body gets rid of this through the lymphatic system.
Antibiotics do NOT kill viruses. A cold is due to a virus, not bacteria. If your cold like symptoms are sinus, running nose, etc., most likely that is from a toxic liver. If you treat just the symptoms, like doctors are trained to do, you will not fix the problem. Doctors prescribe antibiotics like they were candy and are doing the public a lot of harm, simple as that.
A virus is a very complicated organism and there are over 200 viruses that cause the common cold. Any drugs you take to "RELIEVE" the symptoms of a cold will only prolong the cold, take a big toll on your immune system, and affect your overall health. Most people believe that if they feel good, they have solved their problem in regard to a cold.
Now that you have taken the antibiotic (anti = against, biotic = life), you need to fix the problems it caused. You can address the intestinal flora by taking a high quality probiotic (pro = for, biotic = life) for about 2 months or more. Eat lots of fermented foods and avoid all things that contain chlorine, fluoride (like toothpaste that contains that poison and fluoridated water, sodas, etc.)
If the symptoms you feel are sinus related, you have to clean up your liver. If it is just a cold virus, you can be well in a day or two by taking Nucleotides every 1/2 hour all your waking hours. Also, avoid taking ASCORBIC ACID that is sold as vitamin C that it is not. Ascorbic acid depletes your body of calcium and causes the vitamin C cofactors in your body to become deficient. Ascorbic acid won't even cure scuvy. I would also take a product that is high in Allicin that will attack biofilms that can harbor bacteria, viruses, etc.
It is also possible that you may have a fungus infection that antibiotics will not touch. That will have to be handled with a good diet and other herbs.
I suggest you can find the products suggested above at: (800) 370 - 3447. They sell very high quality products I recommend to clients all the time that really work.
good luck to you
Question: How long should I wait to drink after taking Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole & Trimethoprim)? I had an ear infection two weeks ago and I was put on an antibiotic known as Bactrim/Septra (which contains Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim). Today is my last dose. Is it fine if I drink alcohol the day after (24 hours)?
Answer: bactrim's half life is around 10 hours. therefore, you should wait approximately 20 hours after you finished your course of antibiotic to start drinking. so the day after is fine. cheers, mate!
Question: Is any difference in Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim for animals and people? Its brand name is Septra DS. 800/160 mg
meant to say Is there any difference in the drugs Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim DS for use in animals and people? Thanks!
It's brand name is Septra.
Answer: Hello,
Sulfamethoxazole, also known as Co-Trimoxazole in the UK, is a mixture of 2 different antibiotics in one tablet (or capsule).
The first drug is a Sulfa- drug, and the second drug is Trimethoprim. So Sulfatrimoxazole is Trimethoprim with another (Sulfa- ) drug thrown in.
The reason for mixing them, is that they both act to kill certain germs in exactly the same way, - it's to do with how these germs handle folic acid. So the germ-killing effect of the combination, is multiplied.
The Sulfa- drugs were around in the 1950's and 1960's, - way before Trimethoprim was first discovered, - and doctors used to give the Sulfa- drugs alone, because that's all they had at the time.
Unfortunately the Sulfa- drugs had some rare, but quite bad side-effects, like allergic skin reactions and 'Stevens-Johnson syndrome.' These side-effects can also be found in the combination Sulfamethoxazole, and that's partly why it's not used so much these days, - although it can be very effective in the right cases.
Animals I don't know about. I'm a retired doctor, not a Vet.
Hope this helps. Belliger, (retired UK GP)
Question: What would happen if i overdosed on trimethoprim? Well i supposed to take 1 everynight because i have reaccuring kidney infections but recently ive been taking 9 or 11 because ive just recently broken up with my boyfriend and in a strange way i dont feel as sad when i take more than i should.. is this bad?
Answer: The maximum tolerated dose in humans is unknown.
Nausea, vomiting, dizziness and confusion are likely symptoms of overdosage.
Stop therapy. If vomiting has not occurred induction of vomiting may be desirable. Gastric lavage may be useful though absorption from the gastrointestinal tract is normally very rapid and complete in approximately two hours. This may not be the case in gross overdosage.
Acidification of the urine will increase the elimination of trimethoprim. Calcium folinate (5 to 10 mg/day) will reverse any folate deficiency effect of trimethoprim on the bone marrow should this occur. General supportive measures are recommended.
Trimethoprim is dialysable by renal dialysis.
Question: Why sulfa drugs use with the combination of Trimethoprim? Why Trimethoprim used to damage the bacterial cell, but not for human body?
Answer: Because they augment the effect of each other. The have synergism. The answer of the second question is due to difference in architecture of these two cell wall elements.
Question: Will the antibiotic Trimethoprim decrease the effectiveness of my birth control pills? I just started my second pill packet. I went to the doctor today and had to get antibiotics for my UTI. I've heard that it's wise to wait until the next pill packet to have sex if you don't want a pregnancy. Is this true? I'm really bummed because my boyfriend and I's one year anniversary is coming up in 3 weeks and I really wanted to have sex. I do NOT want a pregnancy so I guess it's wise to be "better safe than sorry"?
Answer: Yes it will decrease the effect of your BC. It doesn't matter if you've been on BC for a few months or 15 years like I have, antibiotics will decrease the effectiveness. So, just use condoms while you are on the antibiotics AND for 7 days after you last antibiotic ;)
Question: Is SULFA of any kind in a Polymyxin B SULFATE and Trimethoprim Opthamlmic Solution? Daughter treated for Conjunctivitis came down with a horrible drug reaction rash all over face and eyes. Dr states Suftate and Sufa are "different chains of molecules" and she has a NEW drug allergy and eye drops had no Sulfa in them. Is this so?
Answer: Your doctor is correct. A sulfate is a "salt" not a sulfa drug. Sulfacetamide is the only eye drop that contains a sulfa antibiotic. Sulfacetamide can be combined with Trimethoprim, but it would be listed on your prescription if it contained it. Sounds like something else in the drops irritated her face and eyes.
Question: How long to the side effects of Trimethoprim (anitbiotics) wear off? I took my last dose friday morning and I still feel very ill and sick. Today has been the first Ive been able to eat and drink a decent amount
i was only put on them for possible water infection. The sickness started a day after beginning the antibiotics. thats the only thing I can relate the sickness to
Answer: About 48-72 hours, you should feel better by tomorrow. Are you sure your symptoms are the result of Trimethroprim?
Question: What are the effects of taking trimethoprim with amitriptyline?
Answer: you will have a clear chest and be rather calm cool and collective
Question: My 3 month old has been vomiting her whole feeds for 5 days. Anyone experienced problems with Trimethoprim? 2 weeks ago she also passed blood in her nappy. I think its possibly her medication "Trimethoprim". Anyone else experienced the same problems? My Doc has said possible virus that will pass?
Answer: it might be pyloric stenosis but i would ask about it just in case...its when the baby throws up all food because it can't be digested because the stomach muscle is too large to let the food go down, so it comes right back up.
if your baby is lethargic, sleeping a lot, and has projectile vomit, this may be the cause.
Question: is it okay to be pregnant and take ssulfamethoxazole trimethoprim? my daughter is 14 weeks pregnant and Dr gave her this for a UTI and the pharmacist said she should not take it but the doctor doesn't agree. any suggestions.
Answer: The antibiotic I took while pregnant was cephalexin and it is risk category "B". That one is category "C". I suggest she not take it and request a different prescription. It says it can cause congenital heart defects!

After taking several doses I develed a couple of red spots on my vulva area with some slight blistering a little further below. My blood test came back negative for herpes but I wondered if anyone has has these side effects or reaction to this drug.
Answer: A LOT of people have reactions to sulfa drugs. LOTS. Now that that's been established you should get prescribed something else when you get a UTI.

Question: how does the antibiotic sulfameth/trimethoprim affect birth control? also i was wanting to know when it would be safe to have unprotected sex?
